OpenNotes Executive Director Catherine DesRoches said the growing number of patients able to access their medical records online is advancing the shift toward transparency between doctors and patients.

The software currently enables people living with epilepsy to track their seizures and researchers want to develop the program into a seizure detector as well.

The company also said its scientists are working with Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to test the technology on prostate cancer.

Participants include volunteers at three sites within the United States, including the NIH Clinical Center in Maryland.

The small percentage of hospitals already tapping into the CMS PROs are tracking chronic care management, surgical interventions, mental health and cancer treatments, the company found. And there is evidence more healthcare entities will get in the game in the future.  

A new study found that patients of all ages, with Baby Boomers leading the charge, are interested in accessing medical records online and tapping into portals to book appointment, pay bills, and refill prescriptions. 

Other hospitals including PeaceHealth in the Pacific Northwest are also finding video consults can also open doors to other services to the benefit of patients and healthcare providers. 

The healthcare network has begun rolling out new telehealth services to provide digital second opinions and promote inter-hospital consultations. 

HCA and OhioHealth are also among the first movers overhauling initiatives from technology-led to clinically-focused programs and already reaping early results.
