Australia launches national cancer data framework

The federal government of Australia has developed the National Cancer Data Framework to establish a unified, nationwide approach to collecting and using cancer data.

Based on a media release, the framework sets strategic directions for consistent data collection and reporting across health systems, screening registers and cancer registries, with a focus on supporting clinical care, research and policy.

It forms part of the Australian Cancer Plan and was developed with states, territories and sector partners, embedding Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles and securing endorsement from all health ministers.

WA expands virtual emergency service for children

Western Australia has expanded the WA Virtual Emergency Department (WAVED), now offering state-wide virtual paediatric emergency consultations as an alternative to emergency department visits.

According to a media release, parents calling Healthdirect may be directed to the new WAVEDkids service – currently running three days a week, where senior emergency nurses and doctors provide virtual assessments.

The children's service builds on more than 10,000 virtual consults, including mental health support, already delivered through WAVED. Initially offered to senior folks two years ago, the virtual ED has been expanded in scope following a partnership with Healthdirect early this year.
