Technology often ends up taking time away from nurses based on time-stamped studies of implementation failures, according to Jing Wang, dean of Florida State University College of Nursing.
"Repeatedly, what we have found is that while some of the most creative technologies, that have the best engineers in the world designing them, have proven [only] to work in lab settings," she said.
Workflows must reflect real-world data, added Wang, who is also co-director of the Nursing and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Consortium.
On this week's HIMSSCast, Wang addresses how the consortium of nurses, health systems, educators and industry leaders plans to address the performance gap in artificial intelligence workflows and better assure that nurses influence AI-enhanced clinical workflows and improve patient care.
To answer the question, What do nurses need to be equipped with to implement, disseminate and adopt AI prediction models?, the consortium is looking at micro-credentialing and degree programs. It is also looking at how to develop accessible on-demand guidance that enables nurses to know what to do when they agree with, or go against, an AI output integrated into their clinical workflows and care procedures.
"It all comes down to nursing practice and workflows," she said.
