NYC hospitals sign 2,500 docs in e-referral system

By John Moore

A municipal healthcare organization has more than tripled the number of private physicians that participate in its electronic referral system.

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), a $6.7 billion integrated healthcare delivery system, today reported that more than 2,500 private physicians have joined its computerized information exchange system.

That compares with 822 physicians online when the system debuted in May 2008.

The information exchange system lets community-based providers refer patients to HHC specialty services such as radiology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, and dermatology.

The system is part of the HHC Connectx physician membership program.

The referral system lets community-based providers coordinate patient care with HHC's 11 public hospitals.

Private physicians have made more than 168,000 referrals since the system's launch, according to HHC. The information exchange represents a $2.5 million investment on HHC's part.
