HIT Policy Committee meets today

The HIT Policy Committee, a federal advisory group, meets today from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. ET to discuss the proposed rules on meaningful use and standards.

The meeting, opened to the public and available online, will feature opening remarks from Judy Sparrow, of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, and David Blumenthal, MD, the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.

Paul Tang, the committee's vice chairman, will lead a discussion of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on EHR Incentive Program for Medicare and Medicaid, released Dec. 30. The proposed rule is featured today in the Federal Register.

The group will also discuss an overview of the Interim Final Rule (IFR) on Initial Set of Standards, Implementation Specifications and Certification Criteria for EHRs.

Others on the agenda include Tony Trenkle, of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and Farzad Mostashari, Doug Fridsma and Jodi Daniel from the ONC.

David Lansky and Daniel Weitzner, co-chairmen of the NHIN workgroup, are slated to give a briefing of the group's recommendations.

Tang and Daniel are expected to close the meeting by leading a preliminary discussion on the HIT's strategic framework. A public comment period of 15 minutes will be allotted at the end of the meeting.
