HIMSS Board Chair Barry Chaiken, MD, opened day one with a stirring speech encouraging the use of checklists to reduce medical error and urging technology vendors to make IT attractive. "We must create technology systems so appealing they make physicians want to leave their paper records behind," Chaiken said.

Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint, holds a relic from mobile technology's past as he discusses the rise of smartphones in healthcare. Chaiken and Hesse in their Keynote addresses set the tone for a week of discussions of technology, patient care and multi-disciplinary collaboration within organizations.
