By Kyle Hardy , Community Editor

For the closing keynote session at the HIMSS Virtual Conference and Expo, Stephen Ondra, senior policy advisor for health affairs in the Department of Veterans Affairs, will provide perspective on the industry's most buzzworthy and troublesome phrase.

In his session "Transformational Approaches to Meaningful Use: A Perspective from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs," Ondra is expected to speak on the growing adoption of electronic health records, as well as the VA's own experience launching the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture, its interoperable health IT infrastructure.

The Department of Veteran's Affairs has been wired since 2007, and with meaningful use being a hot topic in healthcare, Ondra is expected to touch on different approaches hospitals could take in order to satisfy the requirements.

When providers are considering looking at IT systems, Ondra said in an interview with InformationWeek, they need to make sure they meet meaningful use [criteria] now and are also positioned for health information exchange in the future.
