HHS awards $6M contract for NHIN work

By Bernie Monegain

The Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a two-year $6 million contract to Arlington, Va.-based Stanley, Inc. to provide operation and infrastructure support for the Nationwide Health Information Network.

The award falls under the company's Chief Information Officer-Solutions and Partners 2 Innovations (CIO-SP2i) contract with the National Institute of Health's Information Technology Acquisition and Assessment Center.

Under this award, Stanley will provide services to support the "onboarding" of participants into the Nationwide Health Information Network Exchange, including issuing digital certificates, updating network directories and providing helpdesk support. The Nitor Group Ltd. and 5am Solutions, Inc. are subcontractors on the Stanley team.

Stanley Vice President Howard Ady said Stanley work would help provide the security, scalability and efficiency needed to achieve operational goals for the NHIN.

The Health Information Technology and Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH Act) sets forth a plan for advancing the appropriate use of health information technology to improve the quality of care and establish a foundation for healthcare reform.

Over the past few years, ONC has invested resources in developing the Nationwide Health Information Network to define the standards, specifications, implementation guidelines, policies and operational infrastructure that will enable the secure exchange of interoperable health information across the country.
