Health informatics training offered

By Bernie Monegain

Health information management expert Fatima Rahman has teamed up  with the Fontana Lewis Library in Fontana, Calif., to offer a free 10-week course in informatics.

"Information technology facilitates the delivery of better patient care and improved patient safety," says Rahman. "There is a tremendous growth currently in the use of information technology in hospitals, physician offices and other health provider establishments to meet federal government and industry requirements."

With that growth will come a demand for health information management systems (HIMS) professionals.

Rahman has extensive experience in health information management system projects and is a certified professional in HIMS (CPHIMS). She was a keynote speaker for British government events on health information systems. She managed a pioneering project using an information system to facilitate the delivery of better healthcare and services to families and children living in the most deprived areas of London, which involved linking up 24 physician offices, hospitals, social services and education (schools and libraries) on a single, coordinated system.

Rahman will be delivering three major events, hosted by the Fontana Lewis Library & Technology Center:

  • September 18: Launch of the health informatics exhibition with 32 exhibits on health informatics.
  • October 6: Health Informatics Seminar 2010
  • October 9: Health Informatics Course (10-weeks)

The course is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge needed to move towards a career in the field of health information management systems.
